With the temperatures rising and summer vacation starting, many people are taking advantage of their vacation time. Although there is a stereotype that nerds do not like to travel, this is not always true. There are many people who enjoy geeky hobbies and like to travel to new places and try new things. Here’s a list of vacation ideas for geeks you might want to try this summer.
Filming Locations
I was going to list a few specific locations rather than make this a general category, but to be honest, there are many of these types of locations all over the world. I didn’t want to be too specific to any one country, and I also wanted to give long-distance travelers some options. Harry Potter was filmed at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England. The filming of Middle-Earth took place in New Zealand. The Hunger Games was filmed in North Carolina. There are numerous filming locations to choose from.
Conventions
Comic, anime, and TV show conventions take place all year and provide a fantastic experience for fans. There’s a lot to do there; awesome people to meet; and amazing cosplay to see. You can even meet and greet celebrities and get autographs from them.
There are plenty of conventions happening each month, and if you have time off from school or work, it’s a great opportunity to attend a multi-day convention. The San Diego Comic-Con, for example, takes place from July 21 to July 24. Check out my comic and anime convention lists to see what other conventions are taking place.
Museums
Museums may appear to be a fairly normal idea, but believe it or not, there are many museums dedicated to geeky interests. There’s a video game museum in Texas, a superhero museum in Indiana, a pop culture museum in Seattle, a Hollywood museum in California, and so on. There are also some in other countries, such as a museum of entertainment in Paris.
Theme Parks
There are a few theme parks dedicated to many of our favorite film franchises. There’s the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. Star Wars, Marvel, and other properties can be found in Disney parks. Six Flags has many rides and experiences themed after DC Comics. There are also numerous LEGOLANDs around the world.
Japan
Okay, I know it sounds strange to mention an entire country, but if you’re an anime fan, this one should come as no surprise. Most anime fans wish to travel to Japan at some point in their lives. Tokyo is probably your preferred option, but that is entirely up to you. There are many anime, manga, and video game stores in Tokyo’s Akihabara district. This is where you’ll find maid cafes. Odaiba is home to a massive Gundam.
Vulcan, Alberta, Canada
I know this is a specific location rather than a general one, but if you’re a Trekkie, you’ll love this. It’s a small town that decided to capitalize on its name by becoming a Star Trek fan destination. It has a space station-themed building, Star Trek memorabilia, a statue of the Enterprise, and other themed attractions.
