Star Rating:
The Black Widow movie takes place after Captain America: Civil War and before Avengers: Infinity War. To be honest, this film felt more like a spy movie than a Marvel superhero movie. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing because that is who Black Widow technically is. She may be a superhero in some ways, but her actions and methods are more akin to those of a spy.
Scarlett Johansson played Natasha Romanoff, as she does in the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character felt exactly the same as she had in other films. Yelena Belova is a character I’ve only encountered in Black Widow comics, and in the ones I’ve read, she’s always been an antagonist to Natasha.
However, I have to admit that I liked this Yelena, played by Florence Pugh. I really didn’t care for her at the beginning of the film, but as we saw more of her, my opinion changed. Her jokes were funny, especially the ones involving superhero poses. I think superhero poses look cool on screen, but I don’t take anything seriously enough to not find those jokes amusing.
Sometimes the movie felt like there were fewer action scenes and more standing or sitting around and talking. That could be because it is more of a spy film than a superhero one, considering Black Widow’s character, but even then, it wasn’t like Black Widow was being spy-like. It was mostly her just conversing with her “family” and the villains. Some of the action sequences were well executed. It would have been nice if there were more of them.
Besides being able to mimic people, Taskmaster is nothing like the comic book version. This Taskmaster technically worked for the specific story of the film, but it is not the Taskmaster from the comics. If you were hoping to see the Taskmaster from the comics, you’ll be disappointed. You’ll enjoy the film more if you go into it knowing that Taskmaster has been changed to fit the plot of the film. After the reactions to the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, I’m surprised they modified Taskmaster so much. I would love to see a Taskmaster who is more like the one from the comic books.
I thought Black Widow was a decent movie, but it wasn’t quite up to par with some of the best. In my opinion, it’s a mid-tier Marvel movie. It’s definitely nice to learn more about Natasha’s past, but it needed more action. I enjoyed it, but I’m not sure I’ll want to keep watching it over and over again like other MCU films. I’m confident Yelena will appear in more films, so you’ll want to see this one to get a full understanding of who she is and where she came from.
