Star Rating:
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the MCU’s second Doctor Strange film. America Chavez, a young girl who can travel through multiverses, seeks Doctor Strange’s assistance when she is targeted by Scarlet Witch, who wants America’s ability to travel to another dimension so she can be with another version of her children.
This film was much darker and more horror-like than other Marvel films, which made it stand out. It wasn’t particularly frightening, but it did have a darker tone given the major concepts and Scarlet Witch’s performance. I think Elizabeth Oslen and Benedict Cumberbatch did an excellent job of portraying their characters’ various variations and personalities.
It did, however, feel more like a Wanda, Christine, America, Wong, and Doctor Strange film than a Doctor Strange film. That’s not to say that movies don’t feature side characters, but there were a few points where the focus was entirely on other characters, and Doctor Strange felt like an extra in his own film.
I thought there were some well-shot scenes in the film, and everything looked good overall. However, the CGI in a couple of areas could have been improved. (I’m sure everyone has seen that eye by now.) But a few places that don’t look perfect (especially with so much CGI) aren’t noticeable when you’re watching a movie for entertainment. It never took away from my enjoyment of the film.
I thought the story was good, but it could have been better. Wanda’s motivations for doing what she did, as well as the abrupt change at the end, seemed off. It’s also not the best idea to rely so heavily on show connections, because not everyone has seen the shows.
I enjoyed seeing Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Professor Xavier. It made me very happy. And I have to admit that seeing Wanda as the Scarlet Witch be so powerful was really cool. In previous films, I felt like the MCU was limiting her power a little too much, despite the fact that she’s a genuinely powerful character in the comics.
Overall, I enjoyed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It was a decent film. Doctor Strange could have shone a little brighter in his own film, but we did get to see him do some powerful things as well, which was fantastic. I think MCU and Marvel fans will enjoy it, but it will be difficult for those who haven’t seen most of the MCU movies and shows to fully understand because it incorporates a lot of WandaVision.
