Invincible is an animated superhero show based off the Invincible comics. It’s about the son of the most powerful superhero on the planet, Mark Grayson. When he finally gets his powers, he must learn how to properly use them while trying to save people, stop bad guys, and deal with his father’s shocking secrets.

I have never read the comics, so I didn’t know what Invincible was about. I can’t say if it properly adapted anything. But I decided to check it out because I heard it was good and I wasn’t disappointed.

Although I’m not sure if it’s considered a parody of the superhero genre, it does sometimes feel that way. Though it’s never done in a way that feels like it’s making fun of it negatively. In fact, that’s one of the best parts of the show.

It’s pretty clear that many of the superheroes and villains are like ones from DC comics and Marvel. Onmiman is an interesting take on an alien like Superman living on Earth. The Guardians of the Glode, like Red Rush and War Woman, have a lot in common with some DC characters too. I mean, come on, a guy wearing red who’s fast. Does that sound familiar?

But Invincible is also just a superhero show with a well-written story and characters. There are some particular aspects of the show that I really like that you don’t often see when it comes to superheroes.

For instance, Mark just got his powers so he’s new to using them. He’s new to fighting bad guys and saving people. And sometimes he actually fails at it. He loses fights. He can’t always save everyone. And while sometimes that might make you upset because you want the good guy to win, it’s realistic and honest and I like that.

Season 1 is also well paced and you want to watch more to figure out what’s going on. There are some lingering questions throughout the first season, and you want to know exactly what’s going on and why. If you’ve seen some spoilers on the internet, then you’ll probably know some things. But if you haven’t, you genuinely don’t know the truth about anything and that pulls you in.

The series is pretty bloody and graphic though. So, if you don’t like violence or much gore, you might be a little turned off by this show. I don’t tend to like too much blood and gore, but usually when it’s a cartoon I’m not really bothered by it as much as I would be if it was live action.

The art style and animation are a little bit anime-esque but still Americanized. It reminds me of the styles from shows like Generator Rex, Ben 10 Alien Force, and Young Justice. Personally, I like it. I’m not the biggest fan of the art style many modern American cartoons tend to have nowadays (which I’ve seen be called CalArts).

I like the characters. I think they are well-written and relatable because many of them struggle with emotions and problems that all of us have felt at some point in our lives. There’s more to each character than just being a hero, even the characters that aren’t in the series for long.

Invincible is a great adult cartoon. It’s entertaining and keeps you interested to watch more. You want to know the truth about everything. You want to know how it’s all going to turn out. And the only way to do that is to keep watching the series. I enjoyed it so much that I already finished watching the second season as well, but I thought I would review that one separately. I definitely recommend watching the series, especially if you really like superheroes.
