Star Rating:
John Wick: Chapter 4 is the fourth installment in the John Wick franchise. With a bounty on his head, John continues his fight against the High Table. As John gets closer to freedom, a powerful member of the round table sets him against other assassins and even old friends.
Like the previous movies, John Wick 4 is jam-packed with well-choreographed action scenes that make for an entertaining action film. While it’s difficult to outdo each previous film, the John Wick franchise has always managed to keep its action unique. This fourth film does this by giving each character distinctive fighting styles and making good use of their surroundings.
I especially liked how each assassin had their own fighting style, and they designed every fight scene to match that style. It made each one different, ensuring that we wouldn’t watch the same couple of punches throughout the whole movie.
They took some liberties in not injuring John, especially when he fell from a high height or multiple cars hit him when the same actions seemed to kill other assassins. But it’s easy to dismiss it as plot armor and not have it bother you. After all, no action or fighting movie could work well if the action realistically injured the main character.
All of the actors and actresses were excellent, but I think Keanu Reeves did an especially good job of expressing how exhausted and tired John Wick has become after everything he’s been through. He just wants it to end, but he keeps going because he knows it won’t be over until he finishes what he needs to. This was also evident in Keanu Reeves’ and the writers’ smart decision to limit John’s dialogue. Fun fact: He only said 380 words throughout the entire film.
Though the movie was supposedly three hours long, I never felt it dragged on or had too many scenes. In fact, I had no idea it was that long until I did some brief research for this review. No scene felt slow or out of place; each one served a purpose and felt that way.
Beautiful locations and film sets, as well as carefully planned shots, contribute to the film’s visual appeal. And, as with previous John Wick films, well-written dialogue added weight and depth to a film made for constant action. Behind all the fighting is the emotional journey of a man who simply loves his late wife.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is simply a continuation of the John Wick movies that many people already love. It’s action-packed, with Keanu Reeves in a nice suit and well-choreographed fighting. Though it doesn’t deviate much from the three previous films or from other action movies, it’s exactly what you’d expect from an action film. Keanu Reeves as John Wick will always be a popular character, and this fourth film does him justice. I highly recommend it (and the previous three films) to everyone who enjoys action films.
