Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is a simulation and role-playing game. You arrive in Olive Town to live on and repair your grandfather’s dilapidated farm. You receive a tent and some basic tools to start working on your farm. There are purchasable upgrades for your tools and house as you progress through the game. The mayor will ask you to help revitalize Olive Town. He’ll post requests on the town hall’s bulletin board for materials. There are no time limits for completing these requests, and you only have to pick one out of the three to complete.
You can do whatever you want each day, and there’s plenty to do. You can log for lumber. Mine for ore. Plant crops and trees or raise livestock to make products and sell them for money. Interact with the townsfolk to improve your relationships. You can even date and marry any marriageable candidate. Fish or take pictures of animals for the museum, and more.
Townsfolk will post requests on the bulletin board that will last for one day. Unfortunately, you cannot save the request in any way. If you want to fulfill a request, do it on the same day you saw it or else it will disappear the next day. I prefer a saveable option, but it’s not hard to work around it.
Crops have certain months they can be planted in and will go bad when the months change. You will have to wait a certain amount of hours for a maker to produce a product. The shops are closed on certain days of the week, which isn’t a negative, but I find myself always needing to go to a certain shop on the day it happens to be closed.
The game play is fairly simple. The game explains everything. To perform an action, you press Y or A. The more you level up, the more you can do and the easier working on your farm becomes. You unlock makers in order to use materials to produce products. For instance, cut down trees for logs and use the lumber maker to create lumber from those logs, or milk a cow and use the yogurt maker to turn that milk into yogurt.
Honestly, the makers were once a con. When I first started playing, the makers only produced one item at a time. There is now an update that lets you make up to ten products at the same time. Luckily, you can pick up and move anything on your farm, so if you place a maker but eventually want to move it or switch it out with a different one, you can.
Your bag, even after upgrades, still feels like it’s too small to hold everything you pick up every day, and I run back and forth between my storage boxes and other sections of my farm constantly. The tool bag is separate and does help improve on space, but you cannot use your tools when they are in there. The storage boxes don’t offer too much space either, so be prepared to add multiple boxes in different areas of your farm. Be smart about where you place the boxes. They can be moved, but you’ll have to take everything out of them first.
Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is a relaxing, easy, farming, and slice-of-life video game. If you aren’t into simple farming games, then you might not want to play it, but if you are a fan of Harvest Moon, Rune Factory, or Animal Crossing, you’ll probably like this one. Personally, I really like these simple, calming games. While I play plenty of games that can stress me out, it’s nice have no worries or stresses when playing a video game.
