Star Rating:
After the fall of the Galactic Empire, a Mandalorian bounty hunter travels throughout the galaxy while protecting one of the targets of a job, a baby who has the same appearance as Yoda and can use the Force.
I was very interested in watching this series when it first came out, but I didn’t have Disney+ at the time. Though there’s still more of the series to go— two more seasons as of now—I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far.
The story is entertaining and compelling. I want to watch more for a variety of reasons. First there’s the main storyline, of course. The baby, nicknamed Baby Yoda before later seasons revealed his name, obviously looks like Yoda. He also can use the Force. So, there’s plenty of intrigue and questions to keep you invested in watching more.
There’s also the relationship between the Mandalorian and the baby. The Mandalorian, called Mando in the series, is a quiet loner. It doesn’t fit his personality to take care of a young child, but seeing him soften over time and basically become a “father” to the baby draws you in.
All the characters, except a few side characters who show up only briefly, are likeable and interesting as well. They all have their own unique personalities and stories, a clear sign, in my opinion, of well-written characters. Of course, Mando and Grogu (Baby Yoda) take the top spot on my favorite character list, but there are a lot of good characters to choose from.
Costumes and sets look good and natural. All of it has that Star Wars feel. And I really liked how the show used the old transitions that the original movies did. The CGI looked well done also. That seems to be rare nowadays despite the idea that CGI should have gotten better as we moved forward technologically.
All the actors did a good job. Though, let’s be honest, it most likely wasn’t Pedro Pascal in the Mandalorian suit most of the time. It was probably a stunt double. Regardless, whoever was in the Mando’s suit did an excellent job portraying a character who always keeps his helmet on. I will give specific credit to Pedro Pascal for the voice, though. The voice feels perfect for the character.
Though mostly Star Wars fans are going to watch this show, I don’t think you need to know every little Star Wars detail to understand it and enjoy it. I know some Star Wars, and I enjoy the stories in it. But I’m still a novice when it comes to all the lore. I’ve started to watch more and understand more as I’ve gotten older. However, there are still plenty of times when I ask my brother (who has loved Star Wars since he was young) a bunch of questions about the timeline and lore.
With that being said, there was never a point when I didn’t understand anything or felt confused. Though I’m not exactly sure when this series takes place in correlation with some of the other shows, we still have a basic understanding of what point in time we’re in in the Star Wars universe.
The Mandalorian season 1 was an enjoyable watch. I’m interested and invested in the characters. I really like Mando and Grogu, as well as some of the other side characters. I’m excited to keep watching more once I start the second season. I think this first season was very well written and thought out, and I hope that the second season continues that trend. So far, I like this series, and I recommend it to Star Wars fans to watch.
