Star Rating:
The Suicide Squad is a standalone sequel to the first Suicide Squad movie. Yes, the names are confusing. Except for Harley Quinn, Colonel Flag, Amanda Waller, and Captain Boomerang, the rest of the characters are new. However, Harley’s and Flag’s personalities seemed different than the first one, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The film has an R rating. There’s a lot of blood, a lot of violence, and a lot of swearing. In comparison to the first film’s PG-13 rating, it makes more sense to make it rated-R and embrace that rating. It allowed the bad guys to be more of who they are.
At first, I wasn’t very fond of Bloodsport. I wasn’t sure if the movie would work with him as one of the leads based on the initial few interactions we had with him, but as the story continues, you see other sides of him. The same may be said for the other characters too. Harley Quinn and King Shark were two of my favorites. Despite the fact that Nanaue is a man-eating shark, his personality is just really adorable and lovable.
Since I first encountered her in the Batman animated series, Harley Quinn has been one of my favorite characters. I’ve read a lot of Harley Quinn comics and this portrayal seemed the most accurate to me so far. I especially liked how she used her gymnastic abilities during one specific scene, which I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to spoil anything. Plus, I’m glad they finally went black and red. I can’t say if the other characters are accurate to their comic counterparts because I am not familiar with them, but all the acting was done well. Nothing seemed out of place or poorly executed.
There were some great action scenes, especially towards the end of the movie. They also made some good musical choices at the right times, in my opinion.
I was expecting a twisted action comedy and that’s exactly what I got. Although I didn’t laugh as much as I expected, there were still some good comedic moments in it. The Suicide Squad jumped right into all of the crazy weirdness and action, with very little down time throughout the film. Over all, I enjoyed it. For the most part, the movie lived up to my expectations. I think it was better than the first film. The film may be too intense for some, but if you like DC and the suicide squad, you’ll enjoy it.
