In the anime Tomo-chan Is a Girl!, best friends Tomo Aizawa and Junichirou “Jun” Kubota like to roughhouse and spar but are always there for each other. However, Tomo is in love with Jun, but because of her tomboy demeanor, Jun doesn’t seem to understand that Tomo is a girl. Despite confessing to him, Jun does not appear to recognize Tomo’s feelings, so she and her other friends work on convincing him to notice her as a girl.
I read the manga a while ago and was happy to learn that it was getting an anime adaptation. I can’t recall the manga well enough to know if the anime followed it exactly, but I still enjoy the anime as much as I enjoyed reading the manga.
The plot is entertaining, and the romance develops nicely. Each episode progresses at a good pace. Nothing feels rushed or too slow. Every episode contains plenty of funny moments, so you will definitely find yourself laughing while watching this anime. It’s lighthearted, which is ideal if you’re looking for a fun romantic comedy without any heavy themes.
However, I believe that the best aspects of Tomo-chan Is a Girl! are the comedy and the characters. All of the characters are extremely likeable, especially as the series progresses and you get to learn more about their personalities, lives, and feelings.
Tomo is such a cutie, and you’re always rooting for her to succeed. Many women can relate to a tomboy’s challenges when she falls for someone or wants to attempt something more traditionally girly.
However, my favorite character was one of Tomo’s friends, Carol, rather than one of the main characters. She’s cute, weird, and random, but she secretly knows a lot more than she lets on, and it’s hilarious. The funniest scenes always involved her, and I found myself drawn to her.
But that doesn’t mean there are characters I don’t like. In fact, I like every character in this anime. Each of them has something endearing about them. Even if they are doing something they shouldn’t be doing, you can’t seem to dislike them for any reason.
Tomo-chan is a Girl! is a lighthearted and fun anime. There’s always something humorous to laugh at, and each character is likeable. The anime’s subjects aren’t particularly deep. But the idea of a tomboy having a crush and trying to act more girly to get his attention can be easily relevant to many. Don’t expect anything profound, but it does offer an honest and inspiring message about love and friendship towards the end. If you’re searching for a lighthearted romance to laugh at, I recommend Tomo-chan Is a Girl!.
