Star Rating:
Top Gun: Maverick is a thirty-year-later sequel to Top Gun. Maverick must return to Top Gun to train the country’s best pilots for a perilous and seemingly impossible mission that could cost them their lives.
This is a fantastic film and sequel, despite being made so many years later. It perfectly mixes old and new. It adds something fresh to the Top Gun canon while remaining true to and appreciating the first film.
Characters from the first film are respected. New characters, even those with a cockier attitude, have their own personalities and depth that make them well-written and interesting. They are perfectly written to counteract their arrogant behavior and truly learn from people and their experiences.
It’s a movie that leaves you on the edge of your seat with sweaty palms, not knowing if each character will survive or how their mission will end. Top Gun: Maverick has a wonderful balance and pace. It never seems monotonous or slow but also never attempts too much at once.
It’s packed with suspense and action, but it also has an incredible heart. The film is more about friendship, brotherhood, and pushing one’s personal limits than it is about the military or aviation. It does, however, highlight how dangerous becoming a military pilot can be, even during training.
Like in Top Gun, fellow pilots begin at odds with one another, but the trust they build with one another demonstrates the strength of human bonds. Grief, anger, and resentment are also handled well, notably in reference to Goose’s death in the first film and his son’s (Rooster’s) relationship with Maverick.
The amount of time it took for this film to be released after the first is nicely utilized within the plot, and the entire film appears to be well written. I didn’t notice any problems with the writing. Even if there are, they are certainly not noticeable when you are completely immersed in the characters and the action on screen.
Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel to the film Top Gun. I never thought we’d need or see it, but it’s a really fantastic movie. It has heart and soul while remaining a fun and entertaining action movie full of nerve-wracking situations. I thoroughly enjoyed it and consider it to be one of the best movies I’ve watched in a long time. I recommend it to everyone, even if you’re not interested in the military, because it’s more about bonds and challenging one’s limitations. It’s also quite entertaining.
