Maomao is a low-level servant in ancient China’s imperial court. When she learns that the emperor’s two young children are ill, she uses her pharmacy talents, which she acquired while growing up in the red-light district, to help them. Despite her desire to keep her talents hidden, Jinshi, an influential eunuch, discovers them. Jinshi leads her to the inner court, where he asks for her help with a number of problems that arise throughout the palace.

Star Butterfly is a lively and childish magical princess from Mewni. On her 14th birthday, she receives the family’s heirloom wand and accidentally sets fire to the castle. Her parents, the King and Queen, decide to send her to Earth as a foreign exchange student so she can continue her magical training. At Echo Creek Academy, she meets Marco Diaz, who lives in suburban Los Angeles with his family. Star and Marco must navigate daily school life while keeping Ludo, a Mewni half-bird, half-man creature who controls other monsters, from getting the wand.

However, disguising her identity becomes increasingly difficult when Ignus realizes she has been concealing her amazing sword skills and decides to make “Sir Celestine” his personal bodyguard.
