Weekly Recommendations is a post I write every Friday in which I recommend three different types of entertainment. These can be anime, comics, movies, books, TV series, and other types of media. Why? Because sometimes you just need something to get into every now and then.

Horimiya

  • Manga
  • Romance, Comedy, Slice-of-life

Kyouko Hori is a popular, attractive, and intelligent student. Izumi Miyamura is a silent loner who is considered gloomy by his peers. An unexpected encounter causes these two to realize that their personalities and lifestyles outside of school are vastly different. Hori is too involved with cleaning and caring for her younger brother to socialize with others, while Miyamura’s tattoos and piercings make him seem like a delinquent. These two form a bond based on their shared secrets, which grows into romance.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

  • Movie
  • Superhero, Action

Following a spider bite, Miles Morales begins to exhibit symptoms that are suspiciously similar to those experienced by Peter Parker. The two meet, and Peter Parker offers to guide and teach Miles through the changes, but he dies. Miles is left alone, with new powers he does not understand and the burden of stopping Kingpin. Miles visits Peter Parker’s grave and encounters another Peter Parker from another universe. The two work together to stop Kingpin and return Peter to his universe. Along the way, they meet other spider-people who wish to return home as well.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun

  • Anime
  • Comedy, Supernatural

The “Seven Mysteries” are the most well-known supernatural rumors at Kamome Academy. Hanako-san, the ghost of a little girl who lives in the girl’s bathroom and is said to grant wishes, is one of these mysteries. Nene Yashiro, a first-year student, calls Hanako-san in the hopes that she will grant her love wish, but the Hanako that arrives is a boy who refuses to help her. Nene swallows a mermaid scale to get her crush’s attention, transforming herself into a fish. Hanako saves her, but it ties the two together, forcing Nene to work as his assistant. Eventually, Hanako drags Nene deeper into the strange world.
