I recently watched The Mask (with Jim Carrey) and RV (with Robin Williams) and started to wonder why there are no comedies like these today. Perhaps I’m not seeing them because there are so many various streaming services available, and I’m not going to pay for each one just to view a few movies here and there.

But there don’t seem to be many ‘family-friendly’ comedies, or at least none that don’t rely on raunchiness and other mature (though not necessarily mature) topics such as alcohol and drugs. The same is true of romantic comedies. Nowadays, it appears that there are only two kinds of romantic movies available for adults. Hallmark movies and others with raunchiness that use the same themes as modern comedians.

The Disappearance of Rom-Coms and Comedies

I used to watch a lot of Hallmark movies, but they became boring to me. They all felt the same way, and yes, they were a touch too plain. I’m also not saying that there can’t be raunchiness, sexual jokes, drinking, and so on; after all, I’m an adult, and I’m not bothered by those subjects here and there. I just think they’re overdone nowadays.

I’m looking for something enjoyable. Where are the romantic comedies like 13 Going on 30, Bridget Jones’ Diary, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Legally Blonde, and Overboard? Where have comedy movies such as Bruce Almighty, Mrs. Doubtfire, National Lampoon’s Vacation, and School of Rock gone?

Where did those types of rom-coms and comedies go?

Why?

It’s not as if none of these films contained sexual jokes or other explicit topics. They just weren’t as visible, frequent, or in your face. Perhaps it has something to do with the scriptwriters. Perhaps there aren’t as many people who can come up with witty jokes that don’t rely on such topics.

Maybe it is due to a lack of actors. After all, many of those films and actors are now older. Jim Carrey has announced his retirement. Robin Williams is no longer around. Chevy Chase is currently 79 years old. Perhaps there are no more actors who can play these roles.

There are obviously still comedy actors, but many of them seem to be focused on raunchy movies. Adam Sandler seems to be the only one currently making comedies that feel similar to what I want (Murder Mystery was fun, and the sequel looks to be as well.)

Maybe there isn’t an audience for these types of films anymore, so they aren’t made. Maybe I’m the only one who thinks this way. I will say, though, that I have discussed this with my family, and they have all expressed the same sentiment. What are your thoughts? Do you want some comedies and romantic comedies that aren’t so raunchy?

Conclusion

I just want a lighthearted, adorable rom-com. I’m just looking for a funny comedy movie that I can watch comfortably with my family. If you know of any, please let me know, and I’ll look into them. But, for the time being, it appears that I’ll have to rely on anime for cute rom-coms and genuine fun comedy.
