Kitty Pride, Storm, Psylocke, Marvel Girl, and Rogue are on vacation in X-Women issue #1.They are attacked, Marvel Girl is kidnapped, and the rest of the gang lose their powers. Kitty, Storm, Psylocke, and Rogue must save their friend and stop the villain without their abilities. It’s a playful, one-issue story written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Milo Manara.
The plot is simple but entertaining. It’s short and won’t take you long to read through it. You don’t need to be familiar with Marvel or X-Men lore to understand, as it explains what power each character has. A newcomer would have no trouble reading this without prior knowledge of the characters or the universe.
Someone familiar with these characters and the lore will enjoy seeing some of the best female X-men in a much different situation than they normally are. You get to see them having fun, but also experience how they deal with a tough situation without their abilities. As a Rogue fan, I appreciated seeing her in a different environment and enjoying some time without her mutation.
The artwork is beautiful. It’s well-done and clearly the result of a lot of effort and care. Manara’s style is gorgeous and intricate. The backgrounds are full of carefully crafted details. I didn’t like some of the facial expressions occasionally, but most of the time they were just as beautiful.
The artwork has a flow to it. It’s easy to follow and doesn’t get confusing as to what bubble you’re supposed to read next. Your eyes glide naturally along each panel, so you don’t feel like you are darting your eyes around. This flow continues from panel to panel.
Overall, X-Women #1 is enjoyable to read, and the artwork is very appealing. There are also some great fashion choices. It’s nice to see these ladies in a variety of outfits, some of which are out there but chosen because they were fun. If you are a fan of the X-Men and these characters, or just want to read a comic for entertainment purposes, then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one.
