I finally saw Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The main concept of Wonder Woman, Batman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and the Flash having to stop Steppenwolf from acquiring three boxes known as the mother boxes remains the same, but this version of the film differed significantly from the 2017 Justice League.
First and foremost, it is a much longer film. They divided the movie into sections to make it easier to watch, but I watched it all at once and it never felt too long. Instead, it felt more like I was watching a mini-series than a film. The pacing was always just right. Nothing was ever too long, too drawn out, or too short.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League clarified everything. It gave us more time to learn about characters we hadn’t met before, such as Cyborg and the Flash. I haven’t seen the 2017 Justice League in a while, but Zack Snyder’s just felt easier to follow and understand. Because it had more time, it seemed to explain everything that was going on better.
It handled Superman better. I wasn’t a fan of how Superman seemed to be the ‘savior’ in the first version of this movie, as if the other heroes couldn’t handle the enemy at all. But this time, while Superman was still a huge help that everyone felt they needed, the fighting seemed more balanced. The others felt that, while they weren’t strong enough on their own, they were still fairly powerful.
The characters were simply written better, and having the time to show who they truly were made them more understandable and likable. Each character had a distinct personality that was never too similar to another. There weren’t too many jokes when there shouldn’t have been, and there was just enough for some comic relief.
The visuals appeared dark and the movie had muted colors. Some of it was obviously done for a specific aesthetic and tone, which is understandable, but the darker lighting makes it difficult to see some details at times. However, there were some truly stunning shots and visual choices in this film. The action and CGI were both excellent.
I still enjoyed watching the first version of Justice League, but I believe Zack Snyder’s version is better. The story was much more well-thought-out and detailed, which added to its appeal. Each character had their backstory and personalities explained, as well as had an opportunity to shine. And the ending piqued my interest in seeing where the story might go. I honestly don’t know if we’ll ever get more to explain what the ending scenes were building up to, but if we do, I’d watch it all. I wholeheartedly recommend this film.
